Small businesses around the world wince at the impending Black Friday sales bombarding the high streets and online. Large, global mass manufacturing allows for big businesses to slash prices, and encourage an over consumption of items we may or may not need. It is a gloomy prospect for many businesses like mine who feel pressurised into doing the same, yet we simply cannot compete with it.
As a one-woman business who not only designs and makes by hand every single item in my shop, I’m also responsible for my business administration, ordering of supplies, product photography and editing, website management and design, shipping logistics and many many other tasks that are involved in single handily running a business on my own. It is a demanding, unpredictable and an often stressful occupation, but I do it because I am passionate about creating original art, and I pour my heart into everything I do. The lead up to the festive season is one of huge importance as it is our most lucrative time of the year, and every sale counts, and in turn ensures the longevity and continuation of Lost Forest.
That’s why this Black Friday, I’m encouraging everyone to consider going green and support small businesses both in your locality, and those online who depend on your custom to continue creating and making pieces that will bring a little more joy, happiness and inspiration to your life, which you will never find in a regular store filled with soulless objects.
